Sport at HSDC

Introduction

Theo Christophorou, a HSDC student on the football academy course said ‘‘I enjoy how much of my course is practical,

and the course has helped me understand my sport in more detail. I also feel safe at college under the restrictions as most people follow them.’’ Students at HSDC have a variety of sporting opportunities both inside campus and outside in the local area. HSDC offers a selection of sports facilities, sport related courses and extracurricular sporting activities. The sport staff at HSDC have worked hard to make sport as accessible and enjoyable as possible under the current circumstances, all while ensuring the safety of students.

Sports Teams at HSDC

In order to keep HSDC students active and competitive outside of college work, HSDC runs a selection of sports clubs. Across our campuses at Havant and South Downs, there are multiple sports teams for men and women such as Football, Rugby, Cricket and Basketball, as well as mixed hockey teams based at the Havant campus. The men’s Football academy consists of 4 squads who compete in the National League under 19 Alliance, the 1st team who play at the highest level, also 1st team reserves and 2 development squads. All squads have regular training with FA qualified coaches. HSDC also has some successful cricket teams, with an outdoor team who train and play in competitions in the summer, and in recent years have become one of the strongest teams in the area. Indoor Cricket is played during the winter, with HSDC’s team tasting success in recent years, after winning bronze at the AoC national championships at Trent Bridge during their 2016/17 campaign.

Sports Facilities at HSDC

At HSDC South Downs campus, students have access to multiple facilities, for example our excellent fitness centre is open all weekdays for student use. Obviously due to the current restrictions because of Covid-19, the fitness centre is only available when pre booked, and students can only attend an allotted time slot. The Monday- Friday sessions run from 5:15-6:15PM or 6:25-7:25PM. Students can sign up for a public session for £3.50, sign ups can be made by

emailing fitnesscentre@hsdc.ac.uk. The South Downs campus also has a sports hall hosting a range of sporting activities both during college days and at weekends, there are specific details on the HSDC website. South Downs also has an exceptional 3G football pitch, which is used by sport students, sport enrichment activities and commonly used by local grassroots football clubs. HSDC South Downs also features a rock climbing wall, used by outdoor adventure students.

Sport Courses at HSDC

HSDC also offers a range of full time sport related courses, allowing students to develop their skills in the practical and theory sides of sport. The South Downs campus hosts multiple vocational sports courses, such as sports performance, coaching and fitness, sport and outdoor adventure, personal training, and sports performance and coaching (Havant and Waterlooville FC academy).
